Food Grade Nitrogen (N₂) is an inert, colourless, and odourless gas used across the food and beverage industries to preserve freshness, improve product quality, and support a range of production and dispensing applications.
In food manufacturing, nitrogen plays a key role in Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) as part of our MAPfresh range, where it helps displace oxygen to slow oxidation, prevent spoilage, and extend the shelf life of perishable products such as snacks, salads, and baked goods. Its inert properties make it ideal for protecting product texture and flavour without the use of preservatives.
In the brewing industry, nitrogen is used for tank purging, blanketing, and pressurisation, helping to maintain product integrity during storage and transfer by preventing oxidation. It’s also commonly used for nitrogenated beers, creating the smooth, creamy mouthfeel associated with stouts and ales.
Within the hospitality sector, nitrogen is occasionally included in cellar gas installations, where it is blended with CO₂ for consistent beverage dispense and to enhance the texture and presentation of certain drinks.
Gas Link Group supplies Food Grade Nitrogen in a range of cylinder sizes to hospitality venues and smaller food producers, as well as in bulk gas systems for larger-scale manufacturing, brewing, and packaging operations. All nitrogen supplied is produced, tested, and certified to food-grade standards, ensuring purity, safety, and full compliance with industry regulations.
